Baryun Completes 250th WATCHMAN™ Implant
Thursday, July 24, 2025
Marshall Health Network recognizes Esam Baryun, MD, cardiologist at St. Mary’s Regional Heart Institute, for completing the 250th WATCHMAN™ implant procedure. The implant is available for patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (AFib) who require blood thinners to prevent blood clots and reduce their risk of stroke.
This significant achievement reflects the skill and dedication of our entire interventional cardiology team, including Dr. Baryun, Dr. Ayman Abozguia, Dr. Charles Osei, and Dr. Joseph Studeny.
AFib is a common irregular heart rhythm that increases the likelihood of blood clots forming in the heart, particularly in the left atrial appendage (LAA), a small pouch attached to the left upper chamber of the heart. As a result, people with AFib are five to seven times more likely to suffer a stroke than those without the condition.
Traditionally, blood-thinning medications have been prescribed to reduce stroke risk in AFib patients. However, long-term use of blood thinners can increase the risk of internal bleeding. The WATCHMAN™ device offers a permanent implant solution that helps prevent stroke-causing blood clots without the need for ongoing blood thinner therapy.
